Initially facial image will be stored, but fingerprint and IRIS data may be stored in the future. It is intended that these documents may be read by any immigration authority and there is therefore a need to ensure that any issuer and any equipment designed to read these documents (or e-passports) are interoperable. The definition of the interoperability standard is being managed by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO9303 2005). The standard also defines an encryption technique which is intended to prevent unauthorised scanning of the data stored by the smart card. ICAO have recommended that the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) will remain a mandatory requirement for the new e-passports and MRZ or OCR data will be used to derive a Basic Access Code which allows the encrypted data to be read.
